Oil Spill an Eye Opener for Ontario

Premier, Dalton McGuinty is revealed to be under the spot light concerning the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which is called to be a “wake-up call” for Ontario.

Thirty environmental, urban planning and health groups are reported to send a letter to Dalton McGuinty today, calling the Ontario's Premier to break the province of its addiction to oil.

The groups — including Earthroots, Greenpeace Canada, Sierra Club Ontario and the David Suzuki Foundation, believe that the detrimental oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico should serve as a eye opener for Ontario and it should rise concerns to this menace.

They are calling that the Ontario Government should step forward and undertake measures in order to curb people’s dependence on oil so that the province can proceed towards cleaner energy methods, such as electric vehicles.

In addition, they urge that new laws and policies should be hammered by the Government in a view to ease the scenario.

Environmental Defense, one of the groups that signed the letter, claims that Ontario consumes almost 200 million barrels of oil every year, primarily for transportation purposes, and sends over $20 billion out of the province to purchase it.
