The government decision to increase the tax on cigarettes has crossed the examination conducted via Senate with stretched backing from all the parties.
The Labor charges on the same has stepped the ladder by $1.80 to more than $14 as the cost of an average cigarette packed containing 25 cigarettes, shall be formalized in lieu of the excise increase by April.
The coalition has been supported by the Liberal Concetta Fierravanti, expressing that the gearing of this move may reduce the long-term pressure on hospitals and healthcare services. After the next election the coalition shall be continuing with the commitment in favor of the Australian people.
The independent Nick Xenophon expressed his support towards the government's decision to raise the excise. According to him the cigarettes should be made more expensive.
However this measure is just one feather in the cap to initiate the policy to reduce smoking. To make the mission accomplished the government needs to draw its attention towards funding the subsidized nicotine replacement therapies.
